Data issued by the US Energy Information Administration showed that crude stocks in the strategic oil reserve in the United States decreased by 7.5 million barrels during the week ending September 2, recording 442.5 million barrels, the lowest level since November 1984.

The agency added in a report issued today that nearly 5.9 million barrels of sweet crude were withdrawn from the US strategic reserve, while 1.7 million barrels of bitter crude (containing some sulfur impurities) were withdrawn.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and allies led by Russia, called OPEC+, had agreed to reverse a 100,000 bpd increase in September after members expressed concern about the decline in prices since June despite tight supplies.
