The STOXX 600 Index fell by nearly 1% by the end of the session amid increasing economic uncertainty
European stock indices ended the first session of the week lower, amid uncertainty among investors about the economic outlook.
At the end of the session, the STOXX600 index fell by about 1% to 462 points.
The German DAX declined by 0.96% at 16,201 points, the French CAC by 1.01% to 7,314 points, and the British FTSE by 0.71%, recording 7,588 points.
The chemicals sector led the losses, falling by 2.8%, while the shares of construction companies fell by 2.5%.
Markets are looking forward to the Bank of England's monetary policy meeting later in the week, as well as the Swiss central bank.
The yield on two-year British treasury bonds - known as gilts - was the highest in 15 years.
Expectations indicate that the Bank of England will raise interest rates by about 25 basis points in the face of high inflation.
The focus is still on the geopolitical situation after China and America agreed to stabilize their tense relations so that they do not turn into a conflict, but they failed to achieve a major breakthrough, at a time when the Chinese government met on Friday to discuss measures to stimulate economic growth.
