Trump: We're in no rush to make trade deals, but we'll make a deal with China
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday, April 17, that he expects progress toward trade deals, but he's not in a rush.
The US president added, "We're going to make a deal with China." He said, "I think we're going to make a very good deal with China."
At the same time, Trump said he expected to impose substantial tariffs on imports from abroad, according to Reuters.
Later, the US president said, "We're doing a good job negotiating trade with all countries." He stated that "countries want to make trade deals with us more than I do."
Trump suspended the reciprocal tariffs he announced on the second day of this month on several countries except China for 90 days, hoping to negotiate with those countries and reach trade agreements.
Tensions between the United States and China have escalated recently after the US President announced several tariff increases on imports from Beijing, and China responded with retaliation. In the latest update, the Trump administration announced a 145% tariff on China, which responded with a 125% tariff and other measures.
The United States and the European Union
Trump also announced that he is "100% confident" that an agreement will be reached between the United States and the European Union on tariffs.
Trump said he is confident the two sides can reach an agreement, but that it must be a "fair agreement."
On Thursday, the US President met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who described the United States as a "trusted partner."
Relations between the US and the European Union have been strained since Trump announced his tariffs.
The Italian Prime Minister told reporters, "I am confident we can reach an agreement, and I am here to help make it happen."
Meloni stated that she would invite Trump to visit her country, noting her expectation that Rome would announce at the next NATO meeting in June that it would be able to fulfill the requirement that each NATO member state spend 2% of its GDP on defense.
