Investors are eagerly awaiting the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for February, which will serve as a crucial measure of inflation risks and their impact on the U.S. economy. This comes amid heated debates over the Federal Reserve’s timing for potential interest rate cuts in 2025.

February Inflation Forecast: Will Price Growth Slow Down?

The inflation data is set to be released at 3:30 PM Riyadh time on Wednesday, with expectations indicating a slight slowdown in the inflation rate for February.

The annual inflation rate is projected to reach 2.9%, down from 3% recorded in January.

Monthly inflation is expected to rise by 0.3%, compared to 0.5% in January.

The Core CPI, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, is anticipated to hit 3.2% year-over-year, compared to 3.3% in January, while monthly core prices are expected to rise by 0.3%, down from 0.4% in the previous month.

Jerome Powell’s Warnings and the Federal Reserve’s Caution

Last week, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned that inflationary pressures remain persistent, even if February's data aligns with forecasts. He emphasized that bringing inflation down to the 2% target sustainably remains a complex challenge, which could influence the timing of potential interest rate cuts.

Will Inflation Delay Interest Rate Cuts in 2025?

Despite a slight slowdown in inflation, core inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s target, raising questions about whether the central bank is ready to implement interest rate reductions anytime soon.

According to Bank of America, if inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s target, even due to temporary factors such as tariffs, inflation expectations may continue to rise, making monetary policy decisions even more complicated in the coming months.

Conclusion

The February Consumer Price Index (CPI) report remains a key milestone in shaping U.S. monetary policy, as upcoming inflation data will determine how soon the Federal Reserve will move towards cutting interest rates, amid ongoing concerns about economic stability and inflation control.
