White House Denies Considering 90-Day Tariff Suspension
The White House said on Monday, April 7, that reports circulating that US President Donald Trump was considering a 90-day suspension of new tariffs were false.
"Fake news," White House spokeswoman Carolyn Leavitt told CNBC, following a report that cited US National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett.
Reuters had quoted Hassett as saying that the US president was considering a 90-day suspension of new tariffs on all countries except China.
Trump himself posted a video on social media of Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo saying, "Prices are coming down, oil prices are coming down, and deregulation is happening."
Bartiromo said in the video, "President Trump will not give in."
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Monday that he told Trump during a phone call that his tariff policies were very disappointing and asked him to reconsider. The Japanese Prime Minister told reporters, "I told the (US) President that Japan has been the largest investor in the United States for five consecutive years, and that tariff policies could hurt our Japanese companies' ability to invest," according to Reuters.
Trump: America's loss on trade is unsustainable.
Meanwhile, Trump wrote in a post on his social media site, Truth Social, that it is "unsustainable" for the United States to lose $1.9 trillion on trade.
Trump's post included a video of him speaking to reporters, in which he also said that the United States cannot lose money on trade "and also spend a lot of money on NATO to protect European countries."
